In the Outsiders’ Club
Opening up about almost always feeling like an outsider, as a British-born Chinese, eldest daughter, second-generation immigrant introvert. (That’s a lotta labels.)

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a bit of an outsider. In fact, it was a longing to find ‘my people’ that drew me to start a blog back in 2009. Within days, I’d started to build a readership of like-minded young people who’d also recently started university or were perhaps applying for fashion internships or who watched endless K-dramas and obsessed over K-pop idols and who definitely were all trying to shop affordably to express ourselves through more eclectic outfits. It was bliss to feel like I was in this secret, underground club – just Blogspot, LOOKBOOK.nu, allkpop and us.
Whenever I find myself in the in-between moments of my life – think queues, waiting rooms, commutes, bus rides, grocery shopping – I can’t help but eavesdrop, just a little bit. And it’s not in a nefarious way. It’s in a ‘I want to understand how others approach X moment in their life’ way.
